Alonso, their star first baseman, is slogging through a down year — .230 average, 19 home runs, and a strikeout rate that keeps creeping up. So yeah, the timing was perfect.

The rivalry that refuses to fade

The Yankees and Mets have been sharing New York since 1964, but the Subway Series has never been a true blood feud the way Yankees-Red Sox is. Jeter made that clear during his playing days. He hit .364 against the Mets over 88 regular-season games, with 13 homers and 44 RBIs. His OPS against them was .955. He simply owned them.

But the defining moment came in the 2000 World Series. Jeter hit .409 with two home runs, won the MVP, and helped the Yankees beat the Mets in five games. That’s the only time the two teams have met in the Fall Classic. The Mets haven’t sniffed that stage since. Jeter, meanwhile, added a fourth ring to his collection.

These days he’s a semi-retired businessman who co-owned the Miami Marlins from 2017 to 2022.
