West Ham Wants $175M for Two Stars — Man United Thinks It Can Get a Discount

Manchester United has quietly opened talks with West Ham over a potential double swoop for midfield creator Mateus Fernandes and winger Crysencio Summerville, according to reports from across the pond. The price tag? West Ham is holding out for roughly $175 million (around £140 million) for the pair. United, naturally, believes it can talk that number down.

Let’s start with what makes this interesting: West Ham just got relegated to the Championship. That reality puts the Hammers in a tough negotiating spot. They want to keep their best talent, but the financial hit of dropping down a division makes holding onto stars like Fernandes and Summerville a shaky proposition. United, sitting comfortably in the Premier League, smells an opportunity.

The Two Players in Question

Fernandes, the 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder, was arguably West Ham’s brightest spark in an otherwise grim season. Quick on the turn, sharp in transition, and capable of unlocking a defense with a single pass — he looks like the kind of player Michael Carrick’s system could build around. Recent reports from the Times have floated an $100 million price for Fernandes alone, with United considered the front-runners for his signature.

Summerville is a different conversation. The Dutch winger put up seven goals and two assists across the campaign — decent numbers, but not the kind that typically command a $75 million fee, which is what the Summerville portion of the package would likely cost if West Ham gets its full asking price. Some scouts argue he’d produce more in a better team. Others point out that United already brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko last summer to overhaul the front line. Adding another winger, especially at that price, feels like overkill.

Value or Overpay?

Here’s the rub: United’s midfield needs an injection of creativity more than the wing needs another body. Fernandes fits that need perfectly. Summerville, while talented, walks into a position where United already has three established starters. Paying premium money for a rotational player is the kind of move that backfires when the budget gets tight later in the window.

Neither club has confirmed the negotiations publicly, so treat the $175 million figure as an opening bid from West Ham — a starting point, not a finish line. United is betting it can shave off a chunk, especially if the Hammers’ relegation forces a fire sale closer to deadline day.

For now, Carrick’s squad looks a few pieces away from truly competing at the top of the table. Fernandes could be one of those pieces. Summerville? The jury is still out on whether he’s the right fit — or the right price.
