Warriors Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg Posts a SpongeBob Meme After Sitting Out a Summer League Game. Fans Are Reading Into It.

Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg didn’t play in Monday’s California Classic finale against the Miami Heat. No explanation from the team. So naturally, the internet did what it does best — it grabbed a meme and ran.

Lendeborg, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, posted a SpongeBob SquarePants image to his Instagram Story not long after the game. In it, SpongeBob’s stomping around with headphones on, backpack slung over one shoulder, phone in hand, glaring at the screen. The kind of look that says “I’m fine, everything’s fine” and also “don’t talk to me.” The post was a repost, not original, but that didn’t stop fans from wondering if the rookie was sending a signal about why he sat out.

Here’s what we actually know: Lendeborg didn’t play against Miami. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson reported that much, but nobody’s said why. Not Lendeborg, not the Warriors. Could be a minor tweak. Could be load management. Could be something else entirely. The team has not commented publicly, and the rookie hasn’t either, outside of that very meme-able story.

The Warriors Gold squad lost that game 95-85, finishing the California Classic with a 2-1 record. (Warriors Blue went 0-3, but that’s a separate conversation.)

Lendeborg had already turned heads

Before the mystery absence, the 23-year-old had been one of the bright spots in Golden State’s early summer. In his Summer League debut Friday, he dropped 19 points, six assists and five rebounds in a 104-72 blowout of the Lakers. Two days later, he put up 11 points, eight boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal in a 98-69 win over the Spurs. Not a bad start for a first-round pick trying to prove he belongs.

The kid can play. And missing one game in a California summer league probably means nothing in the long run. But the internet saw a SpongeBob meme and decided there might be a story there. That’s just how it goes now.

What’s next for Golden State’s rookie class

The Warriors are headed to Las Vegas for the 2026 NBA Summer League. They open Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks and their own lottery pick, Morez Johnson Jr., taken No. 9 overall. That game tips at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN. It’ll be Lendeborg’s first chance to get back on the floor and let his game do the talking instead of a cartoon character.
