Viktor Hovland Viking Rowed His Way to a Travelers Win and Norway Fans Went Wild

Viktor Hovland didn’t just win the Travelers Championship on Monday. He did it with a little help from a very loud, very Norwegian crowd, and then he returned the favor by leading them in a Viking row that’s become something of a national phenomenon.

The Travelers went to a Monday playoff after Scottie Scheffler drained a long putt on the 18th hole Sunday to force extra holes. Hovland held it together on the playoff hole and walked away with his eighth career PGA Tour win. His first since the 2025 Valspar Championship. But the real story might be how he celebrated.

There’s a video going around that shows Hovland linking arms with a cluster of Norwegian fans and doing the Viking row — that synchronized, rhythmic chant-and-motion thing that’s become a signature for Norway supporters. It’s the same row they’ve done on subway escalators, in Times Square, at Citi Field, and even at World Cup matches. It’s not just a golf thing. It’s a whole vibe.

Norway fans made Connecticut feel like Oslo

The Travelers had an unusual number of Norwegian flags in the crowd all weekend. That’s partly because Hovland is the only Norwegian star on the PGA Tour, but also because the World Cup was happening in the same region at the same time. Norway’s national team played a Group I match against France at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, about a two-hour drive from TPC River Highlands. They lost 4-1. So fans who made the trip for that game decided to stick around for some golf.

And you know what? Good call. Because they got to see one of their own hoist a trophy and then row right along with them.

Norway still has a World Cup knockout stage match against Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas. From Hartford, that’s a solid 26-hour drive. So unless those fans packed a cooler and a lot of coffee, they’re probably flying. But hey. The Viking row will almost certainly make another appearance at that game too.

For Hovland, this win is a big deal. He’s been a little quiet since the Valspar win in 2025. Not in a bad way, just not in the winner’s circle. This one puts him back in the conversation as a legit contender going into the rest of the season. And it gave the Norwegian traveling squad something to cheer about after that France loss.

Golf’s not always the loudest sport. But when you’ve got a packed gallery doing a synchronized row with a guy who just beat the world No. 1 in a playoff, it gets pretty loud pretty fast.
