Three years ago, Harry Maguire was basically a punchline. The world’s most expensive defender got stripped of the captain’s armband at Manchester United, lost his starting job under Erik ten Hag, and came within a breath of packing his bags for West Ham. Now? The 33-year-old is a trusted leader again, even if he doesn’t have an official title to prove it.
According to a report from The Sun, United players and staff now view Maguire as second-in-command behind club captain Bruno Fernandes. There’s no formal hierarchy. No coronation. Just the quiet reality that when Fernandes is off the pitch, the locker room turns to Maguire.
The Comeback Nobody Saw Coming
Maguire signed a new contract in April after his old one was set to expire this summer. He finished last season as one of Michael Carrick’s most dependable guys, with two goals and two assists across 25 appearances in all competitions. United grabbed third place in the Premier League table, and Maguire was a big part of that.
But the road here wasn’t smooth. Not even close.
He arrived at Old Trafford in 2019 as the most expensive defender in history. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made him captain in January 2020. Maguire looked like the real deal. Then Erik ten Hag showed up in 2022, and everything changed. The Dutchman eventually took the armband and gave it to Fernandes before the 2023/24 season. Maguire was told he could leave that summer. West Ham was reportedly close.
He didn’t leave. He stayed and fought.
There were injuries. He missed the 2024 FA Cup final with a muscle issue. He was in and out of the lineup. But when Ruben Amorim took over and switched to a back three, Maguire found his footing again. Under Carrick this past season, he settled into a back four alongside Lisandro Martinez and looked like his old self.
More Than Just a Player
Gary Lineker called him “bloody brilliant” after United’s 3-2 win at the Emirates in January. And while that kind of public praise is nice, it’s the stuff happening behind closed doors that tells the real story.
Maguire wore the armband during a shocking EFL Cup loss to League Two side Grimsby Town last season when Fernandes was on the bench. When both guys were out in December, Martinez got the armband instead. That says something about the unofficial pecking order. But Maguire was part of Amorim’s leadership group, and Carrick has kept him close this season too.
He’s one of the longest-tenured guys in the squad now. That experience matters, especially for younger defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven who’ll need someone to show them the ropes next season.
He doesn’t have the captaincy anymore. But in that locker room, he might as well.
