Manchester United have added some experienced depth behind starter Senne Lammens, signing veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer from Leeds United. The 35-year-old Wales international turned down a new contract at Elland Road to ink a two-year deal with an option for a third year at Old Trafford.
Darlow said he didn’t hesitate when United came calling. “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” he said in a statement. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.” He called it a “really special opportunity” and noted the club’s current momentum, adding: “everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club.”
Goalkeeping Room Gets a Shake-Up
Darlow’s arrival signals the likely end of Altay Bayindir’s time at United. The Turkish keeper has been Lammens’ backup but is expected to move back to Turkey, according to reports. United already sent Andre Onana out on loan to Trabzonspor earlier this month, and 40-year-old veteran Tom Heaton signed a fresh one-year deal this summer to stay on as the third option.
So the depth chart suddenly looks different than it did a few weeks ago. Lammens is the clear No. 1. Darlow slots in behind him. Heaton sticks around for emergency cover. And Bayindir heads home.
Darlow’s Path to Old Trafford
Darlow joined Leeds ahead of the 2023-24 season and made 38 appearances for the Whites, 22 of them in the Premier League. He’s also played top-flight football for Newcastle and has 15 caps for Wales. Not bad for a guy who turns 36 in October.
Leeds put out a brief thank-you: “Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds, we wish you and your family the best for the future.” Short and clean, no hard feelings.
United’s Busy Summer Continues
Darlow showed up at Carrington just a day after United finalized the £48 million signing of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. The club is also closing in on Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans after triggering his release clause, per multiple sources.
Manager Michael Carrick is working the midfield hard after losing Casemiro at the end of last season. And with Manuel Ugarte expected to miss significant time after a serious knee injury he suffered playing for Uruguay at the World Cup, reinforcements were never optional.
United open their Premier League campaign on August 22 against newly-promoted Hull City. Darlow probably won’t start, but he’ll be on the bench if Lammens needs a break.
