Utah Guard Stretchered Off Court After Brutal Summer League Collision

A scary scene unfolded in Las Vegas on Monday night when Jazz guard Trey Alexander went down hard and had to be stretchered off the court with just over two minutes left in Utah’s Summer League win over Chicago.

Alexander was driving hard to the rim late in the fourth quarter when he initiated contact with Bulls forward Caleb Wilson, who had already piled up five blocks on the night. It was a routine bump — the kind of move guards use all the time to create space against shot-blockers. But this time something went wrong.

As Alexander absorbed the contact, he immediately grabbed his left side and crumpled to the floor near the baseline. He rolled in obvious pain while the play went dead. Medical staff sprinted over and spent a couple minutes evaluating him before loading him onto a stretcher. The arena went quiet. Fans on social media posted videos with reactions ranging from concern to outright fear for the kid’s health.

What happened on the play

The Jazz had an 80-63 lead and were just trying to run out the clock when Alexander attacked the basket. Wilson shadowed him step for step. Alexander leaned in, put his body on the defender, and then everything changed. He didn’t land funny or twist an ankle. It looked like the contact itself caused the injury — possibly a rib or oblique issue, though the team has not confirmed anything specific.

Alexander stayed down for what felt like forever. Replays showed him clutching his side and grimacing before trainers even got to him. It was one of those moments where you just hope the guy is okay and the rest is secondary.

Alexander’s NBA path so far

Alexander is on a two-way deal with Utah, signed earlier this offseason. He’s bounced around a bit since going undrafted — spent the 2024-25 season with Denver and last year with New Orleans. In 33 career NBA games he’s averaging 2.4 points on 41/31/67 shooting splits. Not a star, but a guy grinding to stay in the league. Summer League is exactly where players like him prove they belong.

He played nearly 24 minutes off the bench in this one and went 0-for-5 from the field with two points (both from the stripe). It wasn’t his best night even before the injury.

The Jazz have not issued an official update on his condition as of Tuesday morning. Everyone’s just waiting and hoping for good news. For now, the basketball part doesn’t matter much.
