Caleb Wilson Could Sit Out Summer League. He Has Other Plans.

Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson is not interested in load management. Not now, not in July, not in Las Vegas.

After grinding through a tough matchup against the Utah Jazz on Monday night, NBA insider Brett Siegel asked the No. 4 overall pick if he planned to suit up for the Bulls’ third Summer League game. Wilson’s answer came fast and loud.

“Hell yeah I want to play tomorrow!”

That’s exactly the kind of energy Bulls fans want to hear from their newest lottery pick. Wilson has been the talk of Vegas since he dropped a historic 35 points in his Summer League debut against Memphis. But Monday night was a different story. The Jazz threw extra bodies at him. They packed the paint. They made him work for everything.

And Wilson still stuffed the stat sheet.

He finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and five blocks. He knocked down three of his attempts from deep. Inside the arc, though, the Jazz defense made life difficult. Wilson went 8-of-17 from the floor and missed all six of his free-throw attempts. Not his cleanest night.

But here’s the thing. He never stopped competing. Those five blocks weren’t just numbers. They were the kind of rim-protection reps that turn good rookies into reliable defenders. Wilson hedged hard on screens, recovered in time to erase layups, and showed the kind of two-way instincts that made him a top-five pick in the first place.

Summer League is usually a place where front offices get cautious. High draft picks get shut down early. Teams cite “maintenance days” and keep their young stars in street clothes. Nobody wants to explain a twisted ankle in a glorified scrimmage.

Wilson doesn’t see it that way. The 6-foot-10 forward is built different. He wants reps. He wants to clean up the rough edges in his game, especially the free-throw struggles that stuck out Monday. And he wants to do it on the court, not from a towel on the bench.

The Bulls haven’t confirmed whether Wilson will actually start Wednesday’s game. But his answer made it pretty clear where his head is at. That kind of mentality doesn’t just help him get better. It sets a tone for a franchise trying to figure out its identity after yet another roster shakeup.

Wilson’s summer rollercoaster continues. One night he’s unstoppable. The next he’s grinding through a fight. Either way, he’s showing up ready to play.
