Uruguay Star Maxi Araujo Opens Door to Summer Exit After World Cup Stint

Manchester United’s summer shopping list just got a little more interesting. The club has been quietly scouting left-back options for months, and the name that keeps coming up is Maxi Araujo. The Sporting Lisbon defender is currently lighting up the World Cup with Uruguay, and he just dropped a hint that could change everything for United’s transfer plans.

Araujo spoke to Portuguese outlet Antena 1 after Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde, and his words were carefully chosen. “I am very happy at Sporting, but you never know what will happen.” That’s not exactly a firm commitment. For a player who previously said he wanted to stay at the club long-term, this sounds like someone who knows his phone might ring this summer.

The timing matters. United finished third in the Premier League last season under Michael Carrick, clinching a Champions League spot. That changes the math on who they can attract. The club already moved quickly to lock down Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but the left-back situation is becoming urgent. Tyrell Malacia left as a free agent. Patrick Dorgu has been playing further forward. And Luke Shaw, despite a healthy season, turns 31 next month with a contract that runs through 2027 and a history of injuries that could resurface at any time.

What Araujo Brings to the Table

The 26-year-old Uruguayan is having a monster season. Seven goals and six assists in 47 appearances for Sporting, 42 of them starts. That’s serious production from a fullback. His pace is genuinely electric, his work rate never drops, and he’s entering the prime years of his career. INEOS has been targeting players in that exact age range — established but not over the hill, with resale value still baked in.

At the World Cup, Araujo has two goals and an assist in just two games. He looks like a guy who thrives on big stages. United could use that kind of personality in a squad that sometimes goes quiet when the lights are brightest.

Release Clause Chatter

Here’s where it gets complicated. Araujo’s release clause is set at €80 million. Sporting have him under contract until 2029 and they’re already trying to get him to sign an extension. They don’t need to sell. But United has been here before with Portuguese clubs — the asking price usually drops if you’re patient and the player starts making noise.

United have already held talks with Araujo’s representatives, according to reports. That’s not a rumor that comes out of nowhere. The player himself seemed happy to see Sporting teammate Ivan Fresneda in the stands for Uruguay’s game, saying he hopes they can “play together for a long time.” That could mean at Sporting. Or it could mean somewhere else. That’s the thing about transfer season — nobody says what they actually mean until the deal is done.

For now, United has a decision to make. Pay the full release clause, try to negotiate down, or move on to other targets. But with Araujo leaving his future open in a public setting, the clock is ticking on whatever comes next.
