The U.S. men’s national team is two wins into the 2026 World Cup, and Tyler Adams is starting to believe the crowd might be the real secret weapon.
After Friday’s 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle, the 27-year-old midfielder didn’t just thank the fans. He tried to describe what it feels like to play in front of them on home soil in a World Cup.
“Incredible,” Adams said. “I can’t thank the fans enough. Playing in front of a home crowd like that gives us that extra motivation, that extra emotion. And it adds so much value to every single thing that we do, every single action that we make. With those fans behind us, I’m not going to say we feel invincible, but wow. It’s encouraging.”
Adams didn’t have to say the word. The way he paused and smiled told the story. The U.S. is 2-0 in Group D and already through to the Round of 32. That’s the earliest the Americans have ever clinched knockout round advancement in a World Cup, even if this tournament is bigger than any before it.
Seattle Stadium — normally called Lumen Field when the Seahawks play — has a reputation. The 12th Man is real. It’s loud. And on Friday, it felt like the Australians were playing in a boiler room. The U.S. grabbed control early, went into halftime up 2-0, and never really looked back.
Folarin Balogun forced an own goal off an Australian defender in the 23rd minute. Then Alex Freeman — yes, the son of former Packers star Antonio Freeman — scored near the end of the first half. The kid has NFL bloodlines but he’s making his own name on the pitch now. He’s 19, plays for the USMNT’s youth system, and suddenly he’s scoring in a World Cup.
“Freeman is an unbelievable character that we have on our team,” Adams said. “Such an amazing young player and amazing person.”
The U.S. controlled 65 percent of possession. It wasn’t the 4-1 demolition they put on Paraguay last week, but it was clean, professional, and efficient. Mauricio Pochettino has this team playing with a confidence that doesn’t feel fragile.
There’s one more group stage game left. The U.S. faces Turkiye on Thursday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Another massive crowd will be there. And if Adams is right, that crowd might be worth a goal before the game even starts.
