Tuchel’s Tactical Pivot Benched Rice at Halftime, and It Worked. Here’s Why.

Thomas Tuchel didn’t wait to see if Declan Rice could tough it out. The England manager pulled his midfielder at halftime during Tuesday’s 2-1 World Cup quarterfinal win over Norway, and the move was less about injury and more about chasing a win.

Rice had been battling a virus that kept him bedridden for days leading up to the match in Miami. He also carried a nagging lower back and hamstring issue from the round of 16. But when Tuchel made the call to sub in Eberechi Eze for Rice, it wasn’t because the Arsenal man looked sick.

The halftime hook

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Tuchel was blunt about his decision.

“It was neither (illness or injury). We wanted a more offensive change. We knew Declan would not last 90 minutes, nor 120 minutes, so we took him off.”

Tuchel had planned the switch before kickoff. Even Jude Bellingham’s stoppage-time equalizer didn’t change his mind. England had gone down 1-0 early but rallied through Bellingham, whose two goals — one in first-half added time, another in extra time — pushed the Three Lions into the semifinals.

Rice spent most of the week in bed trying to shake the virus. He was cleared to start but the coaching staff had already mapped out a shorter shift. That’s a gamble in a knockout game, but it paid off.

England’s injury situation

The team hasn’t confirmed Rice’s status for the semifinal against Argentina or Switzerland on Wednesday in Atlanta. But the fact he was pulled at the break suggests they’ll be cautious. Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke also swapped places during the match, with Madueke coming on late in extra time.

Rice’s absence from the second half didn’t hurt England’s rhythm. Eze brought energy and pressed high, and Bellingham took over the midfield. The Real Madrid star’s brace was his best performance of the tournament so far.

Norway pushed hard in extra time but couldn’t find a second goal. England’s defense held, and they’ll head to Georgia with a semifinal spot locked up. Tuchel now has four days to figure out whether Rice can go the full 90 — or if he’ll need another plan B.

The next match is Wednesday at the Atlanta Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Eastern.
