Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner took a hit Tuesday night that didn’t show up on the scoreboard — but it sure showed up on social media. During a game against the Miami Marlins, a sharply hit ground ball took an unfortunate bounce and caught Turner square in the crotch instead of settling into his glove. The moment, captured on video and shared widely by Jomboy Media, had fans wincing in collective sympathy.
It’s the kind of instant pain that stops any athlete cold. Turner doubled over briefly, and while he stayed in the game, the visual alone was enough to make even hardened baseball viewers cringe. The team has not commented on any lasting discomfort, but Turner appeared to shake it off and continue. The Phillies, however, didn’t shake off their offensive struggles — they lost the game, adding another chapter to what has been a frustrating season for the club.
The incident was just the latest unlucky moment in what has been a tough year for Turner, who is mired in a prolonged slump at the plate. The former All-Star has been below his usual production levels, and the Phillies’ offense has sputtered as a whole. Interim manager Don Mattingly, though, made it clear that the team’s faith in Turner hasn’t wavered.
“I want to show confidence (in him) because I feel confident,” Mattingly said, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I wouldn’t say the things I say if I didn’t feel confident that Trea was going to find it and be swinging more consistently and better as we go through the season. Like when you do certain things to guys, it basically tells them you don’t believe in them, and that’s where I’m not going.”
That kind of public backing matters, especially for a player who has been a cornerstone of the Phillies’ recent playoff pushes. Turner is not the only reason the offense has gone cold — the whole lineup has struggled at times — but his individual issues are magnified because of his contract and role. Still, Mattingly pushed back against the idea of benching or moving Turner down the order.
“He’s not the only reason when things like that happen,” Mattingly added. “Trea’s a big piece of what we’re going to be, and if we’re really successful, we’re going to need Trea. So, I’m not giving up on Trea. I’m not moving him right now. That’s just the way I feel about it.”
For now, Turner will get extra attention from trainers — for reasons that have nothing to do with his swing mechanics. But if the Phillies hope to turn their season around, they’ll need him to recover from more than just that ground ball.
