The Kansas City Royals just picked up a veteran arm, and it all came down to a contract clause most fans have never heard of.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Royals are acquiring right-hander Randy Dobnak from the Seattle Mariners. The 31-year-old exercised what’s known as an upward-mobility clause in his contract, a rare provision that effectively forced Seattle’s hand.
Here’s how it works: An upward-mobility clause allows a minor league player to trigger his own availability for a 40-man roster spot — but only if he’s not already on it, and usually only before a specific deadline. Once Dobnak activated that clause, the Mariners had a choice: add him to their own 40-man roster or trade him to a team that would.
Seattle chose the latter.
Why the Moved Needed to Happen Now
The Mariners’ pitching depth is absurd this season. Even with Dobnak in the system, they had more arms than roster slots. Rather than lose him for nothing, the front office found a willing partner in Kansas City, a club that’s been quietly stockpiling pitching during a rebuild.
Dobnak will report to Triple-A Omaha initially, according to Passan, but the Royals are adding him to their 40-man roster — which is exactly what his clause demanded. The return package going back to Seattle hasn’t been disclosed yet, and the teams have not commented further.
The MLB trade deadline isn’t until August 3, so this kind of early, clause-driven deal is unusual. But with a pitcher-friendly market and contenders already sniffing around, the Mariners likely saw it as cleaning house before the real frenzy begins.
What This Means for Both Clubs
For Kansas City, this is a low-risk shot at a guy who’s bounced between the minors and majors but has shown flashes of effectiveness. For Seattle, it’s a reminder that depth can become a problem when players have contractual escape hatches.
Dobnak’s move is also a peek behind the curtain at the kind of obscure mechanisms that shape roster decisions. Most fans won’t know what an upward-mobility clause is — but right now, it’s the reason a right-hander is suddenly a Royal.
More details on the trade return are expected in the coming days.
