Tottenham is pushing hard for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, and that’s starting to create real problems for Manchester United. According to BBC Sport, talks between Spurs and West Ham are active, with some optimism on both sides that a deal might actually get done.
The price tag is the big one. West Ham wants around £80 million for the Portugal international, which is steep but not crazy given the interest. Fernandes has Premier League experience, he’s still young, and he fits the kind of player Roberto De Zerbi wants to build around: technically sharp, confident on the ball, able to control tempo and add energy in midfield.
Why Fernandes matters to Spurs right now
This didn’t come out of nowhere. Tottenham tried to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle last week. BBC reported Spurs had an £80 million bid rejected. De Zerbi is a known fan of Tonali, but Newcastle wasn’t budging. So the club moved on, and Fernandes became the next guy on the list.
He’s not Tonali. Not yet anyway. But he’s younger, has more room to grow, and could turn into a central piece for De Zerbi’s system over the next few seasons. That long-term upside is what Tottenham is betting on.
Man United watching from the sidelines
United has been linked with Fernandes for weeks now. talkSPORT reported that Spurs are trying to beat them to the signing, which makes sense. If United wants him, they can’t wait around while Tottenham negotiates. West Ham is sitting pretty here. Multiple clubs interested means they can hold firm on that £80 million valuation and wait for someone to blink.
For Michael Carrick and United, this is bad timing. They lose out on Tonali, and now they might lose Fernandes to a direct rival in the transfer market.
Right now, Tottenham’s talks are ongoing. No deal is done yet, but there’s growing belief an agreement could come together. That would be a big win for De Zerbi’s rebuild and a real headache for everyone else watching from the outside.
