Tottenham don’t do subtle this summer. They spent £52 million on Jan Paul van Hecke. They grabbed Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi on frees. Now they want Mateus Fernandes, and they’re willing to match West Ham’s £85 million asking price to get him.
The Daily Mail reports Spurs are ready to go pound-for-pound with West Ham’s valuation of the 21-year-old midfielder. That’s a real number for a player whose club just got relegated. But Fernandes was arguably the best thing about West Ham last season. He’s young, Portuguese, and every big club in Europe wants him.
Manchester United want him too. Arsenal does. Real Madrid, PSG. The list is long.
Tottenham might be the underdog here. They can’t offer Champions League football, and that usually matters. Multiple reports say Fernandes prefers a move to United if he has a choice. But Spurs have a new manager in Roberto De Zerbi, and he’s reportedly pushing hard for this deal. The kind of push that gets things done.
The Spurs Rebuild Has a Midfield Problem
Tottenham were flirting with relegation last season. That’s the truth. De Zerbi has already overhauled the backline with three defensive signings, but the midfield is next. Fernandes is the priority target. He’d bring creativity, energy, and the kind of confidence you need from a player who performed well on a terrible team.
If Fernandes falls through, Tottenham have a backup. They’re also interested in Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. But Newcastle wants around £100 million for him. That’s a different conversation entirely.
West Ham hold the cards here. They don’t have to sell Fernandes cheap just because they’re in the Championship. They know what they have, and they’re asking what the market will bear. Spurs are willing to pay it. Whether that’s enough to actually win the race — that’s the part nobody knows yet.
Manchester United haven’t matched the bid yet. They might. They might not. But Tottenham aren’t sitting around waiting to see what happens. They’re making moves.
