Lucas Bergvall wanted to play. Tottenham told him he was staying. Then they went out and spent nearly £200 million on two midfielders. Now the club is open to selling him.

This week alone, Spurs dropped £85 million on Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and agreed to pay up to £100 million for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. That’s a brand new midfield. That’s also a clear message to Bergvall about where he fits.

The 20-year-old Swedish midfielder started exactly one of the seven games Roberto De Zerbi managed last season. He got 113 total minutes. Two matches he didn’t get off the bench. So when he told the club he wanted a fresh start, it wasn’t exactly a shock.

Reports earlier this week said Spurs had told Bergvall he was going nowhere. The club wanted him in the squad. Then the Fernandes and Tonali deals happened.

According to insider Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham would now “reluctantly allow” Bergvall to leave for the right offer. That’s a quick flip from the earlier stance.

Financial reality hits

Spurs have spent huge this window. Like, huge huge. O’Rourke pointed out that after this kind of outlay, the club needs to balance the books a bit. Bergvall was signed from Swedish club Djurgårdens for a relatively modest fee. He has five years left on his contract. Selling him now would be pure profit under the financial rules. That matters.

Insider Michael Bridge confirmed the mixed messages. He reported that Bergvall has indeed been told he’s not leaving. But he also added his own read on the situation: if a big offer comes in, Spurs would think hard about it. Nottingham Forest is one club with serious interest.

So what’s actually happening here? It might be both things at once. The club doesn’t want to look weak by publicly shopping a young player who wants out. But the checkbook says they need to recoup some cash. And the playing time math says Bergvall is now fourth choice at best in that midfield.

De Zerbi likes the player, according to Bridge. But actions speak louder. Last season under De Zerbi, Bergvall didn’t get real minutes. Add in Fernandes and Tonali and the path gets even narrower.

A previous report suggested Spurs would want around £45 million for Bergvall. That feels high for a guy who barely played. But clubs pay for potential, and Bergvall was considered one of Europe’s top young midfield prospects before he landed in North London.
