Tottenham Ready to Blow United Out of the Water for Mateus Fernandes With £85m Offer

Manchester United’s chase for Mateus Fernandes just hit a serious snag. Tottenham Hotspur is preparing to match West Ham’s full asking price for the Portuguese midfielder, and that changes everything.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs are willing to go to £85 million for the 21-year-old, who is looking for a way out of East London after West Ham’s relegation. United had been the frontrunners for months. Real Madrid dropped out. It looked like a done deal. Then Roberto De Zerbi got involved.

The Spurs manager has been pushing his board hard to not let United have a free run at Fernandes. And with Daniel Levy’s checkbook open wider than usual, the North London club has made its intentions clear. They’re not just matching the valuation. They’re ready to go bigger on wages too.

Where United stands now

The Red Devils have Fernandes valued at around £60 million. They’re willing to go higher — INEOS knows they have to — but there’s a ceiling. Tottenham doesn’t seem to have one on this deal. The Sun reported that Spurs are “going big” on salaries for their summer targets and are prepared to offer more than United can for Fernandes specifically.

That’s a problem. Fernandes has already spent a year on loan at Southampton before his permanent move to West Ham, so he knows the Premier League. He wants to be back in it. United had that connection going for them too — his admiration for Bruno Fernandes is no secret around Old Trafford.

But admiration doesn’t pay the bills. Or in this case, the transfer fee.

The Mbeumo precedent

This isn’t the first time Spurs have tried to hijack a United deal. Last summer, they got close on Bryan Mbeumo before the Cameroonian insisted on joining United instead. That worked out for INEOS then. They’re hoping Fernandes feels the same way now.

The difference is that West Ham holds the cards here. If the Hammers accept Tottenham’s higher offer and push Fernandes toward the exit at White Hart Lane, there’s not much United can do about it. The player’s preference matters, but when an £85 million bid lands on the table, it forces conversations.

West Ham is relegated. They need to sell. They want the best price possible. That’s just business.

For now, United is watching closely. They might still find a way to make this work, especially if Fernandes holds firm. But the clock is ticking, and Tottenham’s offer isn’t going anywhere.
