Morocco and Haiti Just Played the Craziest First Half in World Cup History

It’s not even July yet, and we might already have the best half of soccer from this entire World Cup. Morocco and Haiti just went absolutely nuclear in Atlanta, trading goals in a first half that felt less like a group stage match and more like a video game on the hardest setting.

Haiti, the tournament’s Cinderella story, came out swinging. Ten minutes in, Lenny Joseph pulled off a backheel finish that was so smooth it looked accidental at first. The goal was officially credited as an own goal off Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, but anyone who saw the replay knows Joseph deserves the credit. That was intentional, and it was beautiful.

Morocco answered quickly. Achraf Hakimi, who had been quiet to start the match, pounced on a loose ball in the box and tapped in the equalizer. Easy money for one of the best attacking fullbacks in the world.

But Haiti wasn’t done. Wilson Isidor unleashed a rocket from outside the box that bent and screamed into the top corner. It was the kind of strike that makes you stand up from your couch. There was even a Morocco fan in the stands who couldn’t help but applaud. When the other team’s supporters appreciate your goal, you know you’ve done something special.

And then Morocco came right back. Ismael Saibari scored his third goal of the group stage, making him the first African player ever to score in all three group games at a men’s World Cup. That’s a stat worth remembering. Bayern Munich paid a lot of money for him this summer, and he’s showing exactly why.

The first half ended 2–2, but the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story. This was chaos in the best possible way. Two underdogs trading haymakers on a global stage, with the crowd in Atlanta losing their minds. If you blinked, you missed a goal.

So here’s the real question: has there been a better 45 minutes of soccer in this entire tournament? We’re asking honestly. Drop your vote in the comments.
