Tottenham Looks Ready to Steal Another Transfer Target From Manchester United

Manchester United might have to get used to looking over its shoulder. Tottenham Hotspur is pushing hard to hijack the Red Devils’ pursuit of midfielder Mateus Fernandes, and the situation is starting to feel familiar.

Earlier this year, United kicked the tires on Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi. They reached out to his reps. But Spurs swooped in, convinced the free agent to sign, and walked away with him. Now the same thing could happen with Fernandes, a 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder who just spent last season playing for West Ham.

According to talkSPORT, United has already agreed to personal terms with Fernandes. That part is supposedly done. But agreeing with the player is one thing. Getting West Ham to say yes is another. The Hammers are holding firm at £80 million, and they haven’t shown much interest in negotiating.

Tottenham has already made an inquiry to West Ham about Fernandes. The report says new Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi sees Fernandes as someone who can improve the squad. That makes sense. Fernandes spent the year at West Ham after joining from Southampton, and he was one of the few bright spots in a team that got relegated for the second straight season. That’s a brutal line on a resume for a 21-year-old, but scouts aren’t holding it against him.

“He’s got an unbelievably excellent attitude towards becoming better,” Simon Rusk, who coached Fernandes at Southampton, told Sky Sports. “So he can only use this as being better.”

Fernandes has the kind of profile teams fight over. He’s a powerful ball carrier. He sees passes others miss. Without the ball, he’s aggressive and often in the right spot. He’s not a one-dimensional creator. He can defend. That’s rare.

United wants to upgrade its midfield this summer. That’s not a secret. But the club has been burned before by sticking to valuation limits while rivals pay up. Tottenham got Senesi that way. If Spurs go to £80 million and United blinks, Fernandes will be playing in north London, not Manchester.

West Ham isn’t in a rush. They know what they have. And if two Premier League clubs are circling, the price isn’t dropping. The question is whether United will match the asking price or let another target slip.
