Tottenham Just Broke Their Transfer Record for a Second Time This Week. That’s Not the Whole Story.

The summer window is heating up fast, and Tottenham just made the kind of move that forces everyone else to rethink their plans. They beat Manchester United to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes with an £85 million bid that shattered the club’s transfer record. And here’s the thing: they might do it again within seven days.

Spurs are now targeting Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, a deal that could cost close to £100 million. That would reset their record for the second time in a single week. The club has not confirmed the Tonali pursuit publicly, but multiple outlets report that talks have already started. For a team that’s historically been cautious in the market, this is a real shift in approach.

Arsenal’s midfield hunt is getting complicated

The Gunners still want Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, but Villa’s asking price is £130 million. That’s not a negotiation tactic. That’s a number that forces Arsenal to consider alternatives. A second bid for Bruno Guimaraes is expected, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is on the list too. So is Bradley Barcola, who they’ve reportedly scouted.

Barcola is interesting because he’s not a midfielder. He’s a winger. That suggests Arsenal might be looking at multiple positions rather than just one fix. The team has not confirmed any of these targets, but the pattern is clear: they want options, not just one guy at any cost.

Manchester United needs a new plan

Missing out on Fernandes stings. United had him as a priority target, and now they’re scrambling. Carlos Baleba and Felix Nmecha are reportedly on their radar, and they’ve also looked at Alex Scott. The midfield rebuild was supposed to be straightforward. It’s not.

United fans online have been vocal about the Fernandes loss, but the club hasn’t commented publicly. Expect movement in the next few days, because they can’t afford to sit still while Spurs and Arsenal keep pushing.

Chelsea is grinding out small deals

The Blues made an £8 million bid for Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka. It got rejected. That’s not surprising. What is surprising is that Chelsea keeps coming back. They’re also in talks for Maxence Lacroix and close to finalizing deals for Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria.

These aren’t headline-grabbing moves, but Chelsea is clearly building depth. The Xhaka situation might take another bid or two before it resolves one way or the other.

Liverpool wanted Yan Diomande, but he’s heading to PSG. That opens the door for Barcola, who Liverpool also likes. The same player Arsenal scouted. So you’ve got two Premier League clubs potentially fighting over the same guy. That usually means the price goes up.

The window is still young. But some teams are moving faster than others, and the ones who wait might end up paying more.
