Tottenham Circles Marcus Rashford as Man Utd Demands a Permanent Exit

Tottenham is making a serious play for Marcus Rashford, and it’s not just talk. After barely scraping out of a relegation fight — literally saved by one game last season — Spurs are spending like a team that never wants to feel that panic again. They’ve already dropped £52 million on Jan Paul van Hecke and launched an £80 million bid for Sandro Tonali. Now they’re turning their attention to Manchester United’s unsettled forward.

According to iNews, Tottenham has begun exploratory talks about bringing Rashford to North London. Here’s the twist: they don’t want to pay his £40 million release clause. Instead, they’re trying to structure a lower opening bid to test United’s resolve.

United, for their part, is done with loan experiments. Barcelona had Rashford for a season, looked sharp, and then refused to trigger the £26 million permanent option. That bridge is burned. Old Trafford wants him off the books permanently to shed his massive salary. Another loan to Spain isn’t happening.

Rashford’s natural instinct is to stay abroad or fight for his place at United, where he came up through the academy. But United’s firm stance might force his hand. Money is the real decider here. Any deal means Rashford taking a pay cut, and he’s reportedly open to that if the sporting project is right.

De Zerbi Driving the Push

New Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is pushing hard for Rashford. The Italian is a known fan of the winger and sees him as the kind of direct, explosive threat that can elevate his entire system. Rashford just came off a strong season at Barcelona and carried that form into the 2026 World Cup. A motivated version of him changes what Spurs can do in attack.

De Zerbi is quietly building something. He’s already brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and van Hecke. Fabrizio Romano also reported that Spurs are in talks with the agent of Mateus Fernandes, who’s reportedly loving life in London.

Rashford at 28 still has prime years left. If Tottenham can pull this off, it’s a statement signing. Not just for the fans but for the rest of the league. You don’t go from a relegation scare to landing an England international without making some noise.
