Anthony Martial’s experiment in Liga MX is officially over. And honestly, it went about as badly as anyone feared.
The 30-year-old forward had his contract with CF Monterrey terminated this week, nearly a year early. He was supposed to be there until 2027. Instead, he’s back on the market after 20 appearances where he managed exactly one goal and three assists. That’s not just quiet. That’s a total blackout for a guy who was once the Golden Boy of European soccer.
Now, according to Foot Mercato, Martial wants to come home. His representatives have been shopping his name around to several Ligue 1 clubs. But there’s a catch that’s hard to ignore.
The Nice problem
Right now, only OGC Nice is reportedly open to the idea. And even that comes with fine print. Nice’s brass apparently told Martial’s camp they’d need to clear out some salaries first before they could make a real offer. Martial’s wage demands are reportedly still substantial, which is a tough sell for a guy coming off 18 months of underwhelming production across two continents.
He’s got 30 caps for France and two international goals. That part of his resume still exists. But the player who looked like a generational talent at Monaco and early in his Manchester United career feels like a distant memory now. A decade ago, nobody would’ve pegged him for this trajectory. Not even close.
So what’s next? He’s a free agent, which should help. No transfer fee means some club might take a flier on him in hopes he rediscovers something. But the list of suitors is thin, the demands are high, and the tape from Mexico is rough. Ligue 1 clubs have seen the same games everyone else has.
Martial’s not done yet. But he’s running out of chances to prove he’s still the player he was supposed to be.
