Tonali to United Back On? Spurs’ Push for Fernandes Could Reshape Two Midfield Races

Manchester United might be pivoting hard on Sandro Tonali. And the reason? Tottenham won’t stop chasing Mateus Fernandes.

Let’s back up. United had made Fernandes their top midfield target this summer. The West Ham star, still just 21, is the kind of creative engine they’ve been missing. For weeks, the narrative was simple: Fernandes wanted United, United wanted Fernandes, and everyone was just waiting on West Ham to budge from that £85 million asking price.

Then Spurs showed up.

Tottenham, desperate to avoid another relegation scare under Roberto De Zerbi, have gone aggressive. Reports out of Italy and England this week suggest they’re closing in on personal terms with Fernandes. That doesn’t mean they have a deal with West Ham. But it complicates things. Now the Hammers have a bidding war, and they’re not exactly known for cutting deals.

Plan B already in motion?

A report from SportMediaset’s Orazio Accomando claims United have started asking around about Tonali. That’s notable because just last week, sources suggested United told Newcastle they weren’t interested. Things change fast in a transfer window.

Tonali is 26, still in his prime, and has that relentless engine that Erik ten Hag’s midfield has sometimes lacked. He can run all day, he reads the game well, and he’s got big-game experience from his Milan days. Newcastle paid around £100 million for him two years ago. They’d want something close to that to let him go.

The complication? Arsenal and Tottenham also want him. Spurs are reportedly pushing hardest right now, but United and Arsenal can offer him Champions League football. That’s reportedly a big reason Tonali is open to leaving St. James’ Park in the first place.

So here’s where it gets interesting. United have to decide how long they wait on Fernandes. If Spurs keep driving up the price, does it make more sense to pivot fully to Tonali? Or do they try to play both games and see which one breaks first?

Meanwhile, West Ham is in no rush. They know United’s midfield needs an upgrade. They know Spurs have money to spend. They can afford to let this drag out.

For Tonali, the choice might come down to club vs. city. Arsenal offers London and Champions League. United offers the same competition but a slightly different project — one that’s been rebuilding for a while now without quite getting over the hump. Tottenham offers neither European competition nor recent stability, but they might offer him a guaranteed starting role and the chance to be the face of a rebuild.

Right now, nobody’s close to a deal on either front. But the dominoes are wobbling. One move from Spurs on Fernandes could send United scrambling — and that scramble might end with Tonali in a red shirt after all.
