The Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels just made a trade. And for once it’s not about Shohei Ohtani or some blockbuster name. This one is about depth, control, and a little bit of future planning.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news Wednesday afternoon. The Rangers are acquiring right-handed reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Angels. Straight up. No other names mentioned yet on the Angels’ return side, though that could shift as details trickle in.
The Players Involved
Silseth is 24. He throws hard and has bounced between the Angels’ rotation and bullpen over parts of two seasons. The stuff is real. The command is still a work in progress. Texas sees him as a potential late-inning weapon if they can tighten up his control.
O’Hoppe is the more interesting piece here. He’s a 23-year-old catcher who showed flashes in his first taste of the big leagues. Good defender, solid arm, and he’s got some pop at the plate. The Angels had him buried behind some veteran contracts and a crowded depth chart. The Rangers clearly think he’s ready for more responsibility.
For Texas, this feels like a move that addresses two needs at once. They’ve been trying to stabilize the back end of their bullpen all season. And behind the plate, they’ve been rotating through options without anyone grabbing the job by the throat. O’Hoppe gives them a young catcher they can develop, not just a placeholder.
For the Angels, it’s harder to read. They’re not exactly swimming in young talent. Moving two guys with team control seems like a bet on something bigger down the line. Or maybe they just didn’t see a long-term fit with either guy. The team has not commented beyond confirming the trade is official.
This is a rare intradivision swap. Teams in the AL West usually don’t deal with each other. Too much risk of helping a direct rival. But the Rangers and Angels apparently found enough value on both sides to make it work.
