Cowboys Rookie Caleb Downs Is Already Living Up to the Versatility Billing in Camp

The Dallas Cowboys wanted a chess piece on defense. They may have gotten one before the season even starts.

Caleb Downs, the team’s first-round pick out of Ohio State, has been rotating through multiple positions in his first training camp. New defensive coordinator Christian Parker has already moved the rookie from the edge to the box to deep middle third in consecutive plays, according to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. That’s not just reps. That’s a statement of intent.

Parker, who built a reputation in Philadelphia for molding secondaries into cohesive units, isn’t wasting time. Downs was the best defensive back in college football over the last three years. Now he’s getting thrown into every alignment Dallas can dream up.

More Than a Nickel Corner

Downs worked with the starting secondary on Wednesday as the nickel. Cobie Durant and DaRon Bland handled the outside cornerback spots, while Malik Hooker and Jalen Thompson took the first reps at safety. That setup gives Parker flexibility to move Downs around without completely reworking the starting lineup.

During his college career, Downs played rover in the middle of the field, dropped down into the box against the run, and covered deep zones. That all-around skill set is what made him a top-11 pick and what’s making him a Day 1 problem for opposing offensive coordinators.

Matt Patricia used Downs in a roaming role last season at Ohio State, letting him read and react rather than locking him into a single spot. Parker appears to be headed in the same direction, only with more variety.

Comparisons to Hamilton and Emmanwori

It’s easy to look at Downs and see Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore or Nick Emmanwori in Seattle. Both safeties play with a similar blend of range and physicality. Downs is a bit smaller than those two, but the skill set translates. He can cover slot receivers, fill gaps in the run game, and patrol the deep middle. That kind of versatility changes what a defense can call on any given down.

The Cowboys defense was one of the worst in the league last season. They needed an injection of talent and a new schematic approach. Parker brings both, and Downs looks like the centerpiece of the plan.

Camp is still early. But the Cowboys are already showing their hand. They didn’t draft Downs to sit in one spot. They drafted him to be everywhere. And that’s exactly how they’re using him.
