SWAC and ESPN Lock In a New Deal Through 2031. Here’s What It Means for HBCU Sports.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference is staying with ESPN for the long haul. The conference and the network announced Wednesday at SWAC Media Day that they’ve signed a multi-year extension running through the 2030-31 academic year. ESPN will keep broadcasting SWAC football, men’s and women’s basketball, plus the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and the Cricket Celebration Bowl under the new agreement.

Here’s the breakdown of what fans will get: ten regular-season football games each year across ESPN’s family of networks and ESPN+, plus the conference championship game will now have a chance to air on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2. That’s a step up in visibility. The SWAC title game has usually landed on ESPN2, so the option to put it on ABC or the flagship ESPN channel means more casual viewers might actually stumble into it during championship weekend.

According to Mallory Kenny, ESPN’s director of programming and acquisitions, the relationship goes back a long way. “The SWAC has been a valued teammate of ours since the launch of ESPNU in 2005,” she said in a statement. “We’re pleased to continue bringing the conference’s premier football and basketball events to fans across our networks.”

SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland framed the deal as a win for exposure. “This agreement ensures our student-athletes, coaches and member institutions will continue to receive premier national exposure while showcasing the excellence of SWAC football and basketball,” he said. The conference has been pushing to increase its national footprint, and this deal keeps that momentum going.

The men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will also get TV slots on an ESPN network, with four regular-season conference games featured on either ESPN television or ESPN+. That’s a solid bump for a league that doesn’t always get national attention outside of tournament season.

ESPN’s coverage of SWAC football this year kicks off with the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge on August 29. Alabama A&M will take on Howard University at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. That’s a pretty strong opening slot for an early-season HBCU showcase game.

The extension doesn’t change the basic structure of what ESPN has been doing with the SWAC for years. But it does lock in that relationship further into the decade. For a conference that has leaned hard on the Celebration Bowl as its signature event, having a guaranteed home for its football championship and basketball tournaments through 2031 gives some long-term stability.

And with realignment still shaking up college sports across all divisions, a conference locking down media rights more than seven years out is worth noticing.
