Morehouse College just picked up a running back who was in the College Football Playoff two years ago. That’s not something you see every day in Division II.
Savion Red, who spent time at Texas, Nevada, and Sacramento State, announced on social media Monday that he’s joining the Maroon Tigers. It’s a big get for head coach Brad Sherrod, who’s in his first season running the program after Terrence Mathis was let go.
Red was a monster in high school. At Grand Prairie in Texas, he played wildcat quarterback and put up 1,367 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior. He also threw for 857 yards. That earned him District 8-6A MVP and made him one of the top recruits in the state. He initially committed to SMU before flipping to Steve Sarkisian and Texas.
A winding college path
At Texas, Red switched to receiver, then moved back to running back in 2023. He was part of the Longhorns team that made the CFP and ran for 131 yards and a touchdown that season. But he wanted more touches, so he transferred to Nevada.
The Wolf Pack gave him exactly what he was looking for. Red rushed for 687 yards and eight touchdowns on 119 carries. He had some monster games — 137 yards and four scores against Oregon State, 135 against Troy. Then injuries hit. He transferred again, this time to Sacramento State to play for Brennan Marion, the former Howard OC. A leg injury early in the 2025 season forced him to take another redshirt year.
What he brings to Morehouse
Now he joins a Morehouse team that’s trying to build off a better 2024 season. They lost freshman back Nicholas Woodford to Central Michigan in the transfer portal, so Red fills a real need. The Maroon Tigers open August 29 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on SWAC TV.
Red has one year of eligibility left, and it’s hard to find a back with his pedigree at this level. He’s played in Power 4 games. He’s produced against Mountain West defenses. If he stays healthy, he could be one of the best players in the SIAC this fall.
