Stoke City Lands Ethan Galbraith in Eight-Figure Deal After One Season at Swansea

Ethan Galbraith is on his way out of Swansea City after just one year. Stoke City agreed to an eight-figure fee for the Northern Ireland international, and the midfielder is scheduled for his medical today. The move comes as a surprise given Galbraith only joined the Swans last summer.

Galbraith came up through Manchester United’s academy after leaving Linfield in 2017. He made one senior appearance for United — a Europa League start against FC Astana in 2019 — then bounced around on loan to Doncaster Rovers and Salford City before leaving permanently for Leyton Orient in 2023. Two years at Brisbane Road led to a summer move to Swansea, where he played 44 matches last season, scoring four goals and adding two assists.

That production caught attention. West Ham had been linked with him. But Stoke moved first, and Swansea accepted the bid. BBC Sport reported that the Welsh club agreed to let Galbraith travel after the offer came in, even though they wanted to keep him on a new long-term deal. Galbraith reportedly wasn’t interested in signing an extension.

Swansea loses a key piece, Stoke adds one

Swansea manager Vitor Matos called Galbraith a “really important player” for his side. Losing him a year after bringing him in is a blow. But the fee — described as eight figures — likely gave the club a decision to make. Galbraith’s form in the Championship made him one of Swansea’s more consistent midfielders, and the money probably felt too good to turn down.

For Stoke, this is a statement. The Potters are getting a 25-year-old with Premier League academy pedigree, international experience with Northern Ireland, and a full season of Championship starts under his belt. He can play as a box-to-box midfielder or sit deeper and distribute. (He’s not a pure defensive mid, but he reads the game well enough to hold his own.)

What the move means for both clubs

Swansea now has to replace Galbraith’s minutes and production. Matos will need to figure out his midfield setup before the window closes. Stoke, meanwhile, gets a player who should slot right into their XI and give them more creativity from the middle of the park.

Galbraith’s agent and the clubs haven’t commented publicly beyond the initial report. Medical is today. If everything checks out, this one gets announced within 48 hours.
