Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes ended exactly the way they didn’t want it to. The West Ham midfielder is heading to Tottenham instead after Spurs agreed to meet the £85 million asking price and offered Fernandes a better contract. United held firm on not overpaying. That stance cost them the deal.
But United might not be done shopping in east London. According to Sky Sports, the club is now looking at Crysencio Summerville as a serious option on the left wing. The Dutch winger just finished a World Cup run that ended early — Morocco knocked the Netherlands out Monday night — but Summerville stood out. His pace and ability to strike the ball caught attention, including from United’s scouting department.
Summerville Looks Like a Fit, but It’s Complicated
The report says United sees huge potential in Summerville. They think he could really take off if he’s playing with better players and under better coaches. That’s a pretty direct way of saying they believe West Ham’s current setup isn’t getting the most out of him. And they might be right. Summerville was one of the few bright spots for the Netherlands in a tournament that felt flat for them overall.
But here’s where it gets tricky. United’s interest in adding a left-sided forward is directly tied to what happens with Marcus Rashford. He’s heading back to Carrington after England’s World Cup run. Rashford wants to go back to Barcelona. Barcelona would take him on another loan. United has made it clear they have no interest in that conversation at all. So Rashford staying or going changes everything.
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is another name on United’s list. But Villa doesn’t want to sell him, and his price tag is steep. That makes Summerville a more realistic target, assuming United can figure out the Rashford situation first.
Jason Wilcox and the rest of United’s recruitment team have work to do. The midfield remains the priority, but Summerville is firmly on the radar now. Given how this summer has gone so far for United, nothing is simple. But Summerville’s name keeps popping up, and that usually means something is brewing.
