Spurs and Man United Both in Active Pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. One Club Has an Edge.

The Mateus Fernandes sweepstakes is getting down to the wire. And right now, nobody is quite sure where the West Ham midfielder will land next month. What we do know is that both Manchester United and Tottenham are deeply engaged in talks — and according to transfer insider Ben Jacobs, neither side has been told to pack it in just yet.

Jacobs posted on X that suggestions Fernandes has already picked a club are premature. Both teams remain in active conversation with the player and with West Ham. Spurs’ discussions with the 22-year-old have reached what Jacobs calls an advanced stage. Manchester United, meanwhile, have been circling since May. That’s a long time to linger without making a hard push.

The big question is whether the player actually has a preference at this point. Jacobs says no. Not yet. At least not officially.

The West Ham factor that changes everything

West Ham is in an interesting spot. They don’t need to sell. Not really. But a £90 million cash injection from multiple suitors means they can afford to sit tight and wait for someone to blink. That asking price hasn’t budged, and it’s not likely to unless a club walks away for good.

Both United and Tottenham have the financial muscle to get it done. But spending that kind of money on a midfielder when other holes need filling is always a question of priority.

Fernandes is clearly a talent. But he’s not the only midfielder on the board this summer.

Other names swirling in the midfield market

Elliot Anderson is reportedly bound for Manchester City. United already has a deal in place for Atalanta’s Ederson, per BBC Sport. So Fernandes would be addition number two or three in that area for United, depending on how you count. Spurs have also been linked with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali by the Daily Mail and others. And then there are younger names like Adam Wharton, Alex Scott, and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi — a Moroccan teenager generating real buzz in scouting circles.

So Fernandes isn’t the only option for either club. But he might be the most versatile one available right now.

Jacobs added that further clarity is expected soon. Neither club nor player wants this to drag beyond July. So a decision is coming. Maybe within days. The real question: who commits first?
