Ronaldo Ran Straight to Dalot After World Cup Goal. His Dad Explained Why.

Diogo Dalot has been a Manchester United mainstay long enough that it’s easy to forget he’s still only 27. He arrived from Porto back in 2018, spent a year on loan at AC Milan, and spent years bouncing in and out of the starting XI before locking down the right-back spot. Last season he put up one goal and three assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Solid, not spectacular. But his real value might be something you can’t put on a stat sheet.

Dalot is currently in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. He hasn’t played a minute yet, but he’s sharing a locker room with Cristiano Ronaldo again. The two played together for a season and a half at United and have been on the pitch together 67 times for club and country. That’s a lot of time in the same zip code.

When Ronaldo scored his first goal of this World Cup against Uzbekistan, he sprinted straight to the bench to celebrate with Dalot. Not a random fist pump toward the crowd. He went right to the subs’ bench. Specifically to Dalot.

Dalot’s father Jacinto Teixeira was watching and told Portuguese outlet O Jogo what he saw. And honestly, it’s the kind of thing that makes you remember these guys are actual people with actual relationships, not just jersey sales.

“I thought it was really funny, because it happened right in front of me and I saw Cristiano dash off to celebrate with Diogo, and that made me happy too,” Teixeira said.

Then he dropped the part that explains everything. “Cristiano has always been an idol for Diogo. He doesn’t live with us anymore, but I make a point of keeping the Cristiano Ronaldo posters he used to have on his cupboards and behind his doors in his bedroom back home. He’s always been a role model for Diogo – for his example, dedication, work ethic, responsibility and resilience.”

So yeah. Dalot grew up with Ronaldo posters on his bedroom walls and now his childhood hero runs to celebrate goals with him. That’s not nothing.

Teixeira also thinks the friendship works both ways because Ronaldo sees a younger version of himself in Dalot. “When Cristiano returned to Manchester, their relationship grew closer and, perhaps, Cristiano saw a little of himself in Diogo too,” Teixeira said. “Diogo is also very responsible and focused; he likes to listen to and follow good advice, even when it comes to physical recovery and dietary matters. Perhaps Cristiano sees a bit of himself in Diogo, from when he was that age. That makes me happy, because I think their friendship is genuine.”

Now for the messy part. There are reports that Real Madrid want to pull Dalot away from Old Trafford this summer. Those rumors got louder after Jose Mourinho returned to Madrid. Mourinho was the one who brought Dalot to United in the first place, so a reunion would make sense on paper. But other reports say Michael Carrick has Dalot firmly in his plans for United’s rebuild.

Dalot can play both fullback spots, which makes him valuable. United is also shopping for a new left-back this summer. So it’s hard to see them letting him walk unless the offer is ridiculous.

For now, Dalot is in a World Cup camp with his idol, still playing for the club where he became a regular, and his dad is still holding onto those old posters. That’s a pretty good place to be.
