Caitlin Clark gets the headlines. Aliyah Boston anchors the post. But over the past year, nobody in the Fever rotation has turned herself into a cultural phenomenon quite like Sophie Cunningham.
ESPN’s Hallie Grossman dropped a deep profile on Cunningham Tuesday, and the guard made one thing clear: she doesn’t love the nickname that launched her into the spotlight.
“I am not the enforcer,” Cunningham told Grossman. “I am not a bodyguard. I am just going to do whatever the team needs. And if my teammates need me to stick up for them, I will do that.”
The label stuck after a 2025 dustup with the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham fouled Jacy Sheldon hard after several Sun players had been physical with Clark all game. A fight broke out. Three players got ejected, including Cunningham. And a legend was born faster than you can say “viral clip.”
Grossman captured the moment perfectly: “And in part because Clark is who Clark is (the league’s most polarizing megastar), and Cunningham is who Cunningham is (the league’s most avid avenger), an end-of-game fight in a middle-of-the-season game became a thing. The thing. It’s still a thing a year later, when a finger point becomes its own cultural maelstrom.”
That finger point — aimed at DeWanna Bonner earlier this season — turned into a meme that the White House itself deployed on social media. Cunningham didn’t seek the enforcer identity, but she’s not exactly avoiding it either. The Fever offense has been scorching the last two games, and part of that energy comes from a role player who draws crowds and draws fouls in equal measure.
Indiana hosts the Sun on July 22 at 8 PM ET from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Expect the crowd to be loud. Expect Cunningham to be ready. And expect at least one moment that ends up on everybody’s timeline.
