Kelsey Plum’s Next Team Could Reshape the WNBA Title Race

The Los Angeles Sparks have a problem. A really good problem, actually, but still a problem. Kelsey Plum is playing on a one-year deal worth just under $1 million and she reportedly has no interest in signing an extension. If the Sparks don’t move her before the August 2 trade deadline, they risk losing a top-five scorer for absolutely nothing in free agency.

Plum has only played 12 games this season because of injuries. She hasn’t suited up since late June. But when she’s on the floor, she’s been elite — averaging a career-high 23.9 points and 6.4 assists while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and nearly 39 percent from three. That production makes her a target for every team with playoff ambitions.

The Sparks are currently 10-17, sitting 12th in the Western Conference and five games out of the eighth seed. That’s despite a roster with Ariel Atkins, Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby, Erica Wheeler and former No. 2 pick Cameron Brink. They gave up their own No. 2 pick to get Plum in a three-team deal, so losing her for nothing would sting.

Plum also has a no-trade clause. She can veto any deal she doesn’t like. That means she almost certainly ends up with a contender. Here are three teams that make sense.

Golden State Valkyries

Golden State is only in its second season but already sitting third in the West at 19-9. They have the league’s best defense, with a defensive rating of 100.9. The problem? Their offense ranks just eighth. Plum would fix that immediately.

There’s a comfort factor here too. Plum played with Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase in Las Vegas. She’s also spent multiple seasons alongside Kiah Stokes. That kind of familiarity matters when you’re joining a new team midseason.

The catch is cap space. Golden State doesn’t have much. They’d likely have to package multiple players plus draft compensation to make the money work. But according to CBS Sports, this is the most plausible landing spot for the five-time All-Star.

Washington Mystics

Washington has a young core with Kiki Iriafen, Sonia Citron and Shakira Austin. What they don’t have is a true offensive engine. Plum would give them exactly that — an elite creator who makes everyone around her better.

The Mystics have nearly $2 million in cap space, which makes absorbing Plum’s contract easy. They can also put together a trade package without giving up their best young players. Names like Lauren Betts, Georgia Amoore and Angela Dugalić could be in play.

The bigger question is whether Plum would sign long-term in Washington. If she’s willing, this deal transforms the Mystics into immediate contenders. If not, it’s a rental that costs real assets.

Phoenix Mercury

Phoenix is quietly a realistic option because of cap flexibility. The Mercury have more than $850,000 in space and an established veteran core that could use another star. They’re currently 11-18 and 10th overall. Plum could be the piece that pushes them back into the postseason picture.

The complication is the trade package. Phoenix would likely have to include either Alyssa Thomas or Kahleah Copper to make the money and assets work. That’s a tough ask for a team that doesn’t have the same depth of trade chips as Washington or Golden State.

Still, Plum at her best is a franchise-altering player. For a team like Phoenix, the risk might be worth the reward — even if it’s only for a half-season run.
