Six Teams Already Packing Their Bags as World Cup 2026 Group Stage Nears the Finish Line

The knockout rounds at the 2026 World Cup are still a few days away, but for six teams, the tournament is already over. After dropping their first two group matches, Haiti, Turkiye, Tunisia, Jordan, Panama, and Qatar have been mathematically eliminated. No miracle runs here. No last-gasp heroics possible. Just early exits and long flights home.

Haiti fought hard but couldn’t overcome a brutal draw

Haiti gave Morocco a real scare on Wednesday, pushing them to a 4-2 loss that was closer than the scoreline suggests. But that game was basically a formality. Their fate was sealed after a 3-0 shellacking by Brazil last week, followed by a 1-0 loss to Scotland in their opener. The tournament minnows showed some fight, but the group was just too deep.

Turkiye’s star power wasn’t enough

Turkiye came into this World Cup with legitimate talent. Arda Guler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu are guys who can change a game on their own. But it went wrong fast. They lost 2-0 to Australia in their first match, then dropped a 1-0 decision to a Paraguay side that played the entire second half with 10 men. That second result stings. You can’t afford to lose those games if you want to advance.

Tunisia got blown out twice

The Eagles of Carthage had a nightmare start. Sweden hammered them 5-1 in Mexico, a game where nothing went right defensively. Then Japan poured it on with four unanswered goals. Just like that, Tunisia was done. Two games, nine goals conceded, zero points. A rough showing for a side that usually makes life difficult for bigger teams.

Jordan’s debut ends in disappointment

Jordan came in as one of four first-time World Cup teams, and the experience was short. They opened with a 3-1 loss to Austria, then fell 2-1 to Algeria earlier this week. Coach Jamal Sellami’s squad just couldn’t hang with the pace or physicality at this level. The talent gap was obvious, but they’ll take lessons home.

Panama got stuck in a group of death

Panama’s draw was brutal: England, Croatia, and Ghana. That’s three teams with real World Cup pedigree. They lost to Ghana first, then Croatia. No shame in bowing out from that group, but it’s still an early exit for a program trying to build momentum.

Qatar’s World Cup misery continues

Remember Qatar’s disastrous 2022 tournament on home soil? 2026 hasn’t been any kinder. They opened with a 6-0 beatdown at the hands of Canada, then lost to Bosnia & Herzegovina in their second match. Two games, two losses, and a goal differential that looks like a typo. The tournament experience is over before the final round of group games even starts.

The remaining teams in the group stage now know exactly what they’re playing for. For these six, it’s already time to look ahead to 2030.
