Sharks GM Likens Darnell Nurse Trade to Mitch Marner’s Escape From Toronto

The San Jose Sharks just pulled off a notable deal, landing defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers after he asked for a trade. And Sharks GM Mike Grier didn’t hold back when comparing the situation to Mitch Marner leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs.

According to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, Grier sees a pattern here. Big Canadian market. Big expectations. Big pressure.

“You saw a little bit of that with Mitch Marner getting out of Toronto. Just to be able to breathe, play hockey, and not have — sometimes you kind of feel like the weight of the world’s on your shoulders to perform, and if you lose, it’s your fault, if you win, no one really says anything,” Grier said. “That’s just the life of a player in a big, big Canadian market, and if you’re a marquee player there, that always adds extra pressure to it. We think him coming here and getting out of that environment will only help his game.”

Nurse, a Hamilton native, has basically lived in Canada his whole career. He played junior with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He spent the bulk of his pro time with Edmonton — 798 games, 88 goals and 236 assists. He had only brief AHL stints in Oklahoma City and Bakersfield. That’s it.

So this move isn’t just a change of jerseys. It’s a full reset on where he lives, how he’s perceived, and maybe even how he plays.

The Sharks are betting that stepping away from the Canadian hockey fishbowl will unlock something in Nurse. He’s still got plenty of runway left, and San Jose isn’t exactly a pressure cooker right now. They’re rebuilding, which means Nurse can focus on his game without the nightly scrutiny that comes with playing for a Canadian contender.

Grier’s comments about Marner are interesting too. Marner was a frequent target of criticism in Toronto, especially during playoff runs. Since moving to Vegas, he’s put up solid numbers and seemed to enjoy a lower-key existence. The Sharks are hoping for a similar rebound effect with Nurse.

Nurse’s contract isn’t tiny — he carries a cap hit north of $9 million — but the Sharks have the space. They’re not competing for a Cup this year. They’re building. And if Nurse can settle in and play like the guy who once logged 25-plus minutes a night in Edmonton, this could end up looking like a smart buy-low move.

The free agency period is still churning, and more trades are coming. But the Nurse deal stands out as a rare example of a player actively seeking an exit from a Canadian market and getting it.
