Sean Keys Sent a Canada Day Rocket and the Blue Jays Loved Every Second of It

Sean Keys just made sure nobody at Rogers Centre forgot what day it was. The Blue Jays rookie infielder crushed his first career MLB home run on Wednesday afternoon, and he picked a hell of a time to do it.

Bottom of the third inning. Two runners on. The kid from the 40-man roster stepped in against Freddy Peralta and didn’t miss. He sent a fastball deep to left field, over the wall, and suddenly Toronto had a 5-0 lead over the New York Mets. The place went nuts. It was Canada Day, and Keys gave the home crowd exactly the kind of spark they came to see.

The 23-year-old right-handed hitter has been grinding through his first big league stint, and moments like this are why the Jays brought him up. He wasn’t some top-100 prospect coming in with a hype video — he’s the kind of player who works his way into the lineup and makes the most of the opportunity when it comes.

Keys took Peralta’s pitch and didn’t try to do too much with it. Just a clean, violent swing that connected in a way every hitter dreams about. The ball kept carrying, the crowd kept roaring, and by the time it landed, Keys had a home trot he’ll remember forever.

His teammates met him at the dugout with the usual mayhem. Someone probably got him with the silent treatment first. That’s how it goes for rookies. But you could tell from the reaction that this wasn’t just another home run. It meant something. Canada Day, first homer, on national television. Hard to script it better than that.

The Blue Jays have been trying to find some consistent production from the infield, and Keys has been getting reps at second and third. He’s not a power hitter by reputation — this is a guy who spent last season in Double-A working on his approach. But the bat speed is real, and the confidence that comes from a swing like that? It changes things.

As for the game itself, Toronto was still playing when the homer left the yard. The Mets bullpen was starting to stir. And Keys was already the story of the afternoon, no matter what happened after.

More details on the game and Keys’ reaction should be coming out soon. But for now, there’s a rookie in Toronto who just lived out a pretty good Canada Day fantasy.
