The San Diego Padres are sitting at 45-46. That’s not great, obviously. And when your lineup isn’t hitting and you’re 14 games back of the Dodgers, people start asking questions. Hard questions. Like, should they trade Mason Miller?
Miller, 27, isn’t just some closer. He’s the best closer in baseball right now. A 0.96 ERA. A league-leading 23 saves. He’s basically been the one thing going right for the Padres this season. So the idea of moving him feels a little wild at first glance. But the numbers are what they are, and the Padres don’t have a deep farm system to work with.
MLB analyst Jim Bowden was on Foul Territory and basically laid it out. He said the conversation starts with the idea that maybe it’s time to trade Miller and turn him into four players to plug holes, not just for this year but for future years. That’s a pretty direct take. Bowden’s not alone in thinking this way either. Steve Phillips, another MLB analyst, has already pushed the idea too.
The Padres are 4.5 games back of an NL Wild Card spot. That’s not nothing. They could still make a run. But if they keep playing like this over the next couple weeks, the trade rumors are only going to get louder. And Miller’s name is going to be at the center of it all.
Here’s the thing about Miller though. He’s not the reason they’re struggling. He’s been lights out. But when you don’t have prospects to trade for stars, you have to think differently. Selling high on a reliever — even a dominant one — can be a smart long-term play. Especially if you get four young players back who can help for years.
San Diego’s front office has some big decisions to make. The trade deadline is coming up fast. Do they hold onto Miller and hope for a wild card push? Or do they cash in their best trade chip and reload for the future? It’s not an easy call.
One thing is certain. If the Padres keep losing, those Miller trade rumors aren’t going away. They’re going to get loud.
