Ronaldo Broke a 20-Year World Cup Drought. Then He Watched the Winner From the Bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo finally scored his first World Cup knockout-stage goal. It took him nearly two decades. And then he got subbed off before the winning goal went in.

Portugal needed a hero against Croatia in the Round of 16. Ronaldo, at 41 and playing what he has called his final World Cup, delivered from the penalty spot in the 67th minute. A VAR review spotted a foul on Renato Veiga in the box. Ronaldo sent Dominik Livaković the wrong way and tied the game at 1-1.

It was a milestone that felt almost absurd for a player with 11 World Cup goals across six tournaments. Before Wednesday night, Ronaldo had gone eight knockout appearances without a goal or assist. The last time he contributed in a knockout round at a World Cup was 2006. That is a long time for a guy who has scored in basically every other big moment.

But Croatia had grabbed the lead first. Ivan Perišić beat Diogo Costa in the 53rd minute, punishing Portugal for not finishing earlier chances. The Vatreni had a shock lead and looked organized enough to hold it.

How Portugal Won It Without Him on the Field

Ronaldo got his equalizer. But he did not get to finish the game. He came off in the 81st minute for Ruben Neves, a defensive move from the Portugal bench. The winning goal came from Gonçalo Ramos, of all people. The same guy who replaced Ronaldo in the starting lineup in the 2022 World Cup knockout rounds. Ramos rose to head home a Rafael Leão cross deep into stoppage time. Portugal won 2-1. Ronaldo watched from the bench.

Croatia thought they had answered back almost immediately. But the flag went up for offside. It was one of several Croatian goals ruled out on a frustrating night for Luka Modrić, who is also likely playing his final World Cup at age 40. The two legends, Modrić and Ronaldo, shared a moment after the final whistle. It might be the last time they face each other on this stage.

The win sends Portugal into a Round of 16 showdown with Spain at Dallas Stadium on July 6. Ronaldo will be available. He will probably start. But for one night, the story was about a drought finally ending and a substitute finishing the job.
