Ronald Koeman Steps Down From Netherlands Job Hours After World Cup Exit

Ronald Koeman is out as head coach of the Netherlands national team. He resigned less than 24 hours after Morocco knocked the Dutch out of the World Cup on penalties in Guadalajara.

The match finished 1-1 in regulation before the shootout went sideways for Oranje. Crysencio Summerville, Quentin Timber and Justin Kluivert all missed from the spot, and that was that. The Dutch never looked sharp in group play either, and the first knockout round turned out to be their ceiling.

Koeman posted a letter on Instagram confirming the decision. He said he took the step himself after the loss, not because the federation pushed him out. He’s been in charge since 2023, his second stint leading the national team after a first run from 2018 to 2020 that ended when he left for Barcelona.

A career that ran hot and cold

Koeman’s coaching resume is long and genuinely impressive. He worked at Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, Southampton, Everton and Barcelona in addition to his time with the Dutch setup. As a player he earned 78 caps for the Netherlands and was part of the 1988 European Championship-winning squad. But his second go-round with Oranje never really clicked the way anyone hoped.

In his letter Koeman wrote, translated from Dutch, that he felt proud of his career but disappointed in how this chapter ended. “No one is more disappointed about that than me,” he said. “As a head coach, you carry that responsibility. I have always felt that and I will always continue to feel that.”

The personal side of the decision

Koeman also made clear that stepping away from football right now isn’t just about the loss. His wife Bartina has been fighting breast cancer since June 2024, and he said he wants to be there for her. “The past years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football,” he wrote. “Football has been my life, but health is priceless.”

He thanked his players and said Bartina had pushed him to finish the job through the tournament despite her own treatment. “That is a testimony to incredible strength,” he said. “I appreciate her more than I’ll ever be able to put into words.”

No word yet on who takes over the Netherlands job. The Dutch federation hasn’t commented on a timeline for finding a replacement. But the next international window is still months away, so there’s time.
