Manchester United just agreed to pay Chelsea £50 million for Andrey Santos, and Rio Ferdinand is not fully sold. Not yet, anyway.
The Brazilian midfielder is on his way to Manchester for a medical. United think they got a steal. Chelsea let him go. But Ferdinand, the former United center-back, says everyone needs to pump the brakes.
“Is he the guy who is going to replace Casemiro? I don’t think he is the guy who immediately jumps into those shoes and performs at that level right now,” Ferdinand said on his podcast. He didn’t bury the kid, though. He sees potential. Just not instant-impact potential.
The Midfield Mess United Is Trying to Fix
United went after Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Aurelien Tchouameni first. Missed on all three. Then they tried Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. Bournemouth said no, basically. It would take something like £80 million for them to even talk. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is also on the list, same price range. Michael Carrick reportedly loves him. Carlos Baleba is still a name in the building, but Brighton wants £100 million even after he had a rough season.
So United circled back to Santos. They first talked about him last year during the Alejandro Garnacho negotiations with Chelsea. Back then, Chelsea said no. Now they said yes. Santos wants to play more, and the Blues opened the door.
What Santos Actually Brings
He’s 22. He’s got six caps for Brazil. He’s played in the Premier League already, on loan at Strasbourg and then in Chelsea’s system. United’s front office thinks £50 million is a bargain. Inside sources say they were surprised Chelsea took it.
Ferdinand isn’t alone in wondering if Santos can start right away. He thinks the kid can grow into a long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo. “Could he be the long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo? Yes, he could,” Ferdinand said. “But I’m looking to see who else they bring in in that area because I think he is one of maybe three to come into that area to share the load.”
Fans have been mixed on social media. Some are annoyed United signed a guy Chelsea was willing to sell. Others think it’s solid depth. Ferdinand lands more on the depth side. “Is he a good addition to the squad? Yes. Is he going to start immediately? I would say not right now.”
So United gets a young midfielder with upside, but the midfield rebuild is not done. Not even close.
