Rio Ferdinand Thinks Man United Are Waiting for One Midfielder and It’s Not Who You’d Guess

Manchester United have already missed on two of their top midfield targets this summer. Elliot Anderson went to City for a British record fee. Mateus Fernandes is headed to Tottenham. And right now, the only new face in United’s midfield is Ederson, who they grabbed from Atalanta for about 35 million pounds.

Ederson is solid, no doubt. Physical, athletic, the kind of player who can win a duel and keep the ball moving. But he’s not the kind of signing that makes fans sit up and pay attention. United were supposed to be overhauling the midfield this summer, and so far it looks more like a patch job.

But club legend Rio Ferdinand isn’t sweating it. He went on X and basically said United are saving their real money for one guy.

“I think Man United are holding the money back for one man, and that’s Aurelien Tchouameni,” Ferdinand posted. “If he becomes available in this market, Man United are not gonna miss – they can’t afford to miss with that one.”

Tchouameni has been linked to United before

The Real Madrid midfielder has been on United’s radar for a while now. He’s the kind of player you build a midfield around. Strong, smart, reads the game well. And there’s been chatter for months that he could be the long-term replacement for Casemiro at Old Trafford. Which makes sense, because he’s already done exactly that at Madrid.

According to reports, Real Madrid might actually be open to letting him go if the right offer comes in. There’s a feeling in Madrid that they need to clear space in midfield for whatever profile Jose Mourinho wants. And word is that Tchouameni would be open to a move to United if Madrid gives the green light.

Don’t forget the World Cup factor

Tchouameni is 26 years old and having a monster World Cup in North America right now. He’s playing some of the best soccer of his career, which only drives up the price and the urgency. If United want him, they probably need to move before another club jumps in.

Ferdinand seems to think the club is playing it smart, waiting to see if Tchouameni becomes available. But in this market, waiting is risky. City and Tottenham already made their moves. Other clubs will too. United can’t afford to get cute with this one.

The question is whether United will actually pull the trigger. They’ve been linked to big names before and ended up with plan B or C. Ederson is already on board. But if they can land Tchouameni, that changes the whole look of the midfield. And it would be the kind of statement signing fans have been waiting for.
