Rio Ferdinand Says Arsenal Should Grab Marcus Rashford for £40 Million While They Can

Rio Ferdinand thinks Arsenal are overthinking this one. Just pay the money and bring Marcus Rashford to north London.

The former Manchester United defender made his feelings pretty clear on his podcast this week. With Rashford reportedly available for around £40 million after a strong loan spell at Barcelona, Ferdinand believes the Gunners would be foolish not to pull the trigger.

“For 40 million, I am sweeping Marcus Rashford off his feet,” Ferdinand said. That’s a direct quote. He didn’t hedge or add qualifiers about form or fit. Just straight up: go get him.

Why the left wing is Arsenal’s biggest hole right now

Arsenal won the Premier League last season. They also made the Champions League final. That should be enough for most clubs. But this is Mikel Arteta we’re talking about. The guy treats every roster like it’s one injury away from collapse.

Gabriel Martinelli has been inconsistent. Some games he looks like the future of the position. Other games he looks lost. And Leandro Trossard is reportedly on his way out this summer. So yeah, left wing is a problem.

Rashford at his best is a match-winner. We’ve all seen it. The question is which version of Rashford shows up week to week. At Barcelona last season he looked revived. A change of scenery did him good. But Manchester United fans will tell you they’ve seen this movie before. Great loan spell. Big expectations. Then the inconsistency creeps back in.

Still, £40 million for a 28-year-old with Rashford’s pedigree? That’s not nothing, but it’s also not the kind of fee that should scare Arsenal. Especially when you consider what other players are going for this summer. Coventry City just spent £20 million on a single player and they were in the Championship last year. The market has gone completely sideways.

The risk is real but the upside is obvious

Here’s the thing about Rashford. He has 131 career goals for club and country. He’s scored in big games. He’s won trophies. The talent isn’t the question. The question is whether Arteta’s system would get the best out of him consistently.

Arsenal hasn’t commented on the reports linking them to Rashford. That’s standard. But the rumor mill keeps turning and Ferdinand’s comments are just more fuel on the fire.

If Arsenal does make a move, they’d be getting a player with something to prove. That’s usually the best kind to buy.
