The summer transfer window is starting to feel like a real soap opera now. Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Liverpool all had something cooking on Tuesday, and a few dominoes are starting to fall.
Let’s start with Arsenal, because they’re the busiest. The Gunners are back in talks with Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez. They’d wanted him before, it fell apart, and now it’s live again. Leandro Trossard is heading the other direction to Besiktas, which frees up a spot and some wage budget. Bruno Guimaraes is still the big one they’re chasing, though Newcastle is playing hardball. Arsenal also has Morgan Rogers and Christos Tzolis on the list. That’s a lot of irons in the fire for a club that already has a pretty deep squad.
Manchester United officially announced Andrey Santos as their first signing of the summer. He’s a young midfielder from Chelsea’s system, actually, which is funny. United also moved on from trying to sign Ederson from Atalanta and are now focused on Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans. There’s a medical scheduled. Manu Kone from Borussia Monchengladbach keeps getting mentioned too, so it feels like midfield is the priority at Old Trafford.
Over at Chelsea, the big news is that Xabi Alonso was officially unveiled as the new manager. He showed up and immediately confirmed that he wants to keep Alejandro Garnacho and Nicolas Jackson. But the transfer rumor mill has the Blues chasing defenders. Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano and Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg are both targets. There’s a new bid coming for Chavarria soon, according to reports. Chelsea’s spending might slow down a bit under Alonso, but it’s clear they’re not done yet.
Tottenham is working on deals for Eli Junior Kroupi, a teenager from Lorient, and Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest. But they might also be losing Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence this summer. Links with Savinho, who’s been turning heads at Girona, and Rafael Leao from Milan are still floating around. The Spurs rebuild under Ange Postecoglou is taking shape, slowly.
Liverpool might have a clear path to Bradley Barcola now that PSG has decided to listen to offers. That’s interesting because Barcola had a solid season in Ligue 1 and Arsenal was looking at him too, but they shifted focus elsewhere. So Liverpool could move quick if they want him.
That’s basically where things stand right now. It’s mid-July and the window is about to get loud. Check back later because something will probably break by dinner.
