Rich Paul Says LeBron Is ‘Having Fun’ With Free Agency. Here’s What That Means.

LeBron James is doing something he hasn’t done since 2018. He’s a free agent, and he’s taking his sweet time deciding where to play next. His longtime agent, Rich Paul, sat down with ESPN during summer league and basically confirmed what everyone suspected: LeBron is enjoying the chaos.

“There’s communication from players directly to him, and obviously I handle it from an organization perspective, but I think it’s admirable the way he’s sought after today and it’s a testament to his hard work,” Paul said. “We’re taking this thing really seriously, but at the same time, we’re having fun. I think it’s great for the fans.”

The usual suspects are circling. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers are all reportedly in the mix. But nobody knows where LeBron is leaning, and Paul isn’t rushing things. “I just tell him to take your time and whenever you’re ready just let me know,” Paul added.

This isn’t LeBron’s first free agency rodeo

But it is his first since leaving Cleveland for the Lakers seven years ago. That stretch in Los Angeles is actually the longest he’s ever stayed with one team. He spent seven years with the Cavs to start his career, then four with the Heat, then four more back in Cleveland before heading west.

The big difference this time? LeBron wasn’t signed with the Lakers beyond the 2025-26 season. So when he opted out, it wasn’t a surprise move — it was just the next step in a career built on controlling his own narrative.

Paul made it clear that LeBron has earned the right to do whatever he wants. “He’s earned the right to make whatever decision he wants,” Paul said. That’s not just agent talk. LeBron has been the most powerful player in the league for over a decade. Teams don’t court him. He lets them court him.

There’s no timeline for a decision either. LeBron is reportedly weighing his options while also considering where his family wants to be and what kind of roster he’d be walking into. The Warriors offer a fascinating fit with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. The Heat have that Miami culture and Pat Riley’s track record. The Cavs are the hometown team with a young core that just made a playoff run. The Sixers have Joel Embiid and a roster built to win now.

For now, LeBron is just letting the drama breathe. And Rich Paul is loving every second of it. “I think it’s great for the fans,” he said. Whether that means LeBron stays in L.A. or moves on to a fourth franchise remains the biggest question of the offseason.
