Luke Kornet Made a Video Pitch for LeBron James. It Was as Spurs as You’d Expect.

LeBron James has been in the league for over two decades. He’s heard pitches from teams. He’s probably heard pitches from fans, teammates, and random people on the street. But has he ever gotten a recruiting pitch from Luke Kornet? Probably not. Until now.

Kornet, a center for the San Antonio Spurs, posted a YouTube video this week aimed directly at LeBron. The video is essentially a voice memo. Kornet stands in front of a plain background, wearing a Spurs shirt, and makes his case. It’s earnest. It’s a little awkward. It’s very Spurs.

“Hey LeBron, it’s Luke Kornet, No. 7 on the San Antonio Spurs. You yelled at me a little bit last year,” Kornet said in the video. “I just wanted to kind of extend the invitation to come over here to San Antonio. We got a great thing going; a lot of young talent. It’s an easy place to live; it’s tax-free. You can play alongside another generational player, and Victor [Wembanyama] too.”

That last part is the punchline. Kornet calls Wembanyama the second generational player after himself. It’s self-deprecating humor disguised as a recruiting pitch. And honestly, it’s the most San Antonio thing possible from a guy who knows his role is to set screens and grab rebounds, not sell free agency.

LeBron’s free agency this summer has been a slow burn. Or at least the public version of it. Teams like the Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, 76ers, and Timberwolves have been linked to him. Reportedly, some have sent voice messages to Rich Paul, LeBron’s agent. Kornet just decided to upload his straight to YouTube instead of sending it through proper channels.

Does it matter? Probably not. James is likely looking at a contender with established stars. The Spurs have Wembanyama and a young core, but they also just made the Finals. That’s not nothing. But the Spurs front office hasn’t confirmed any real pursuit of James. And at this stage, it’s fair to wonder if they ever made a serious call.

Kornet’s video will probably never reach LeBron. But it doesn’t need to. It’s a lighthearted moment in a free agency cycle that’s been full of posturing and leaks. And if nothing else, Kornet reminded everyone that the Spurs still have a sense of humor. Even if their pitch isn’t going anywhere.
