The Mbappe problem that won’t go away
For over a year now, Real Madrid’s coaching staff has dealt with a headache they created themselves. Both Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe want to play on the left. Both are devastating when they cut inside from that flank. Both also become less effective when asked to play somewhere else.
Vinicius has been flexible at times. But Mbappe has been clear about where he wants to be. His 10-goal run at the most recent World Cup came almost entirely from that left-sided spot. Moving him off it, the thinking goes, costs the team his best version.
Selling Vinicius would clear that logjam in one move. Mbappe slides to his preferred left wing permanently. The tactical shape becomes simpler and more dangerous. From Madrid’s perspective that’s not a sacrifice. It’s an upgrade.
Haaland as the replacement

Madrid has wanted Haaland for years. The Norwegian has made no secret that he’d like to play at the Santiago Bernabeu eventually. The question has always been timing and price. With a Vinicius sale funding the deal, both those problems go away.
Adding Haaland as a traditional No. 9 changes everything about how Madrid attacks. Mbappe on the left, Haaland through the middle, Rodrygo or Brahim Diaz on the right. That’s a front three with no overlap, no wasted movement, and no positional arguments.
The contract standoff
