Real Madrid’s Plan for Mateus Fernandes Runs Into a Problem Named Manchester United

Manchester United and Real Madrid are about to go head-to-head over a 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder who wasn’t even on most radars a year ago. Mateus Fernandes, the guy West Ham signed from Southampton last summer, is suddenly the hottest name in the European transfer market. And United might be the only thing standing between Real Madrid and their guy.

Fernandes joined West Ham expecting stability in the Premier League. Instead, the Hammers got relegated. Now he’s almost certainly leaving east London, and the asking price is steep. West Ham wants somewhere around €80 million (£69.2m) for the technically gifted number eight. British reports have tossed around an even higher figure — £80 million, which is over €92 million — but the point is the same: this kid won’t come cheap.

United’s strong push versus Mourinho’s pull

According to Spanish outlet AS, via Sport Witness, Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has made Fernandes a priority target. Him and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. But here’s the thing: AS says United is the “main obstacle” for Real Madrid. The club is making a serious push to land Fernandes, and that’s not nothing when you’re talking about a player who reportedly prefers Old Trafford over any other destination.

Arsenal and PSG have been linked too, but Fernandes’ camp has made it pretty clear Manchester is where he wants to be. That was the story before Real Madrid showed up. Now it’s a two-horse race with Mourinho trying to use his Portuguese connection to swing things.

What about Tchouameni?

Here’s the interesting subplot. If United loses Fernandes to Real, there’s a consolation prize floating around. Aurelien Tchouameni has been on United’s dream list for a while. And Mourinho reportedly favors Fernandes over Tchouameni anyway, so there’s a natural fit for a swap of ambitions. If Real lands Fernandes, they might be willing to let Tchouameni go. That would free up cash for Mourinho to build his squad for his second stint at the Bernabeu.

It’s the kind of domino effect that makes transfer windows fun. One guy’s destination shifts, and suddenly a whole other deal opens up.

Fernandes not in Portugal’s World Cup squad

For all the buzz, Fernandes isn’t actually with Portugal at the World Cup right now. National team coach Roberto Martinez has praised him publicly — “what he’s doing now is incredible,” Martinez said back in March — but the squad decision went another way. That might change quickly if Fernandes lands at a bigger club and starts producing at a higher level.

For now, the clock is ticking. West Ham wants to cash in. United wants to win the race. Real Madrid wants to remind everyone they’re still Real Madrid. And somewhere in the middle of all that, a 21-year-old midfielder is about to make a decision that shapes the next five years of his career.
