Enzo Fernandez might be the next big name out the door at Stamford Bridge. Reports have resurfaced linking the Argentine midfielder with a move to Real Madrid, and this time the talks have some actual weight behind them.
BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella reported that discussions are back on between the two clubs. Chelsea’s last asking price for Fernandez was around $150 million (roughly £120 million). And according to Kinsella, personal terms have never been a problem. Fernandez wants the move.
That’s the thing here. Chelsea can try to hold the line on the fee, but if a player is pushing for an exit and a club like Madrid comes calling, it usually gets done. Fernandez has reportedly been keen on the Bernabeu for a while now.
This wouldn’t be the first Chelsea-to-Madrid pipeline this summer either. Marc Cucurella already made that jump. And there’s chatter that Malo Gusto could be looking for the door as well, per another BBC report. So it’s not just one guy. It’s a pattern.
And honestly, can you blame them? Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season. No European football. No silverware. Nothing. When you’re a player of Fernandez’s caliber — a World Cup winner — sitting in mid-table with no continental competition has to sting. He’s 25. He’s in his prime. He probably looks at a midfield of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga and thinks he can walk into that group and improve it.
Fernandez hasn’t been perfect at Chelsea. He’s had stretches where he looked like the best player on the pitch and others where he disappeared. But the talent is real. And in Madrid’s system, with more freedom and better players around him, he could absolutely thrive.
The big question for Chelsea is what happens next. If Fernandez leaves, that’s a huge chunk of the midfield gone. If Gusto goes too, the right side gets thin. And replacing players of that level isn’t cheap or easy, especially when you don’t have Champions League football to offer. The club’s recruiting team has work to do.
For now, the focus is on whether Madrid will actually meet that price tag. They’ve spent big before. They know what they want. And if Fernandez keeps pushing, this one might get done faster than people expect.
