The World Cup has been all about France’s attackers. Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola have been making defenders look silly. But anyone who watched Les Bleus closely knows the real engine sits deeper.
Aurelien Tchouameni doesn’t get the headlines. He gets the ball from his center backs, turns, and feeds the guys who do. He’s 6’2″, he’s a monster in transition, and when Mbappe’s not wearing the armband, Tchouameni is. That tells you something about how France’s camp views him.
And now Real Madrid might actually let him go.
According to ESPN journalist Rodra P (via UtdDistrict), the La Liga champions are seriously considering selling Tchouameni this summer. The asking price is around €90 million, which works out to about £77 million. That’s steep. But it’s not outlandish for a 26-year-old midfielder who just won the Champions League.
Why Real Madrid might move on
This isn’t about Tchouameni’s ability. He’s been solid. But Jose Mourinho wants a creative midfielder, and according to The Athletic, a departure in the middle of the park is seen as necessary to clear space for Mourinho’s preferred guy. Tchouameni’s profile doesn’t quite fit what Mourinho’s looking for.
The Athletic’s Andy Mitten reported that Tchouameni is happy in Madrid but would also be open to joining Manchester United if Real decides to part ways. That’s the kind of willingness that gets deals done.
Fabrizio Romano has previously called Tchouameni a dream signing for United. He said the club loves the player. The catch is the salary. Tchouameni makes serious money at the Bernabeu, and United would have to match or exceed that.
United’s need is obvious
Casemiro left a hole in United’s midfield that nobody has truly filled. Tchouameni is exactly the kind of defensive-minded No. 6 who could lock that down. He’s not flashy. He’s just effective. He breaks up attacks, keeps possession simple, and lets the creative players do their thing.
And look at what other clubs have spent lately. Tottenham paid big for Mateus Fernandes. Manchester City dropped serious cash on Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson. If United wants to compete, they can’t sit this one out just because the wage bill gets a little uncomfortable.
Whether Real actually pulls the trigger remains to be seen. But the signals are there. Tchouameni might be the most understated star on the market this summer. And United knows exactly what they’d be getting.
