Ravens Star Calais Campbell’s Brother Charged With Mother’s Murder Days After Her Death

The Baltimore Ravens and the NFL are reeling after a family tragedy turned into a criminal investigation this week. Veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell announced the death of his mother, Nateal Campbell, on Tuesday. Then, just days later, Atlanta police arrested his brother, Ciarre Campbell, charging him with her murder.

Officers with the Atlanta Police Department responded to a welfare check at a townhouse in the Buckhead neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. They found the 71-year-old Nateal Campbell dead inside. Police also encountered a male suspect who had barricaded himself in the home. After gaining entry, officers detained 41-year-old Ciarre Campbell. He now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife, according to the department.

This all unfolded after the Campbell family released a statement expressing profound grief, noting that the circumstances surrounding Nateal’s death were still under review. The family called her the matriarch and said they take comfort knowing she is reunited with her late husband, Charles ‘Chuck’ Campbell.

The Ravens are expected to support Calais Campbell through an extended leave if needed. The team has not commented on the charges specifically, but head coach John Harbaugh said earlier this week that the organization’s priority is Campbell and his family.

Beyond football, Nateal Campbell was deeply involved in the Charles R. Campbell Foundation, which focuses on youth development through mentorship, education, and sports programs for underserved communities. She helped teach leadership, financial literacy, and life skills to young people. The foundation’s mission was something she and her son shared.

The arrest casts a long shadow over the Ravens as they prepare for the 2026 season. For now, the focus is on Campbell and his family as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
